MILLION INFECTED IN A DAY

How did Omicron conquer America?

Everyone who has been following the pandemic in recent weeks knows that omicron leads to milder symptoms than the delta strain. It is also known to spread faster. However, the numbers of over 200,000 newly infected in some European countries are worrying, especially the one million registered cases in the United States in one day.

Johns Hopkins University counted the number of new infections on Monday and reached 1,082,549 new cases of coronavirus.

However, the media note that this does not necessarily mean that all cases are from that day, because some institutions did not report the number of those infected during the weekend, so it could, in some cases, be a multi-day balance.

The previous infamous record was set last week and amounted to 505,109 new cases.

The number of hospitalized jumped by 50 percent compared to the previous week, and currently more than 100,000 people are in hospitals.

The average number of deaths, fortunately, has not increased, and amounts to 1,300. Reuters, however, notes that the number of deaths always lags behind the number of new infections, so that in the coming period that number could be much higher.

President Joe Biden appealed to all those who have not been vaccinated to do so, i.e. to receive a booster dose if they have not already. He also stated that the number of infected people is growing in the White House.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that the omicron strain has been present in 95.4 percent of cases since January 1. They also recommend reducing the period between receiving the second dose and the booster dose from six to five months.
