VON DER LEYEN
EC suggested candidate status for Ukraine and Moldova
The European Commission formally recommended EU candidate. The Commission also recommended to enable European perspective to Ukraine and Moldova and to assign them to the status of candidate for EU membership, which also implies that these countries must have all the necessary reforms.
“Ukraine has clearly demonstrated the country’s aspiration and the country’s determination to live up to European values and standards,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in Brussels.
From 2016, when the Association Agreement was signed Ukraine has already implemented roughly 70 percent of the EU acquis, that is the rules, the standards and the norms, von der Leyen said.
Ukrainians were "ready to die" for the "European dream," von der Leyen told a news conference.
Speaking of Moldova, von der Leyen said the country has been on the right track. Officials indicated that progress is needed in each country to strengthen the rule of law, as well as anti-corruption measures, and to modernize their judiciaries, and generally prepare their economies for further integration into the EU’s single market.
When it comes to Georgia, the EC has recommended allowing it the European perspective, but added that it has to fulfill additional conditions before obtaining the candidate status.
