"Pork in Montenegro is safe"

After the information that the import of pigs and meat from Northern Macedonia and about 20 other countries was banned due to the outbreak of African swine fever, the director of the Food Safety Administration Vladimir Djakovic told Radio Montenegro that pork on our market was safe.

"Veterinary and food inspectors at the borders regularly control the animals, meat and meat products that are imported, so safety is guaranteed," Djakovic said.
He notes that African swine fever is a highly contagious and dangerous disease for pigs and the agricultural world, but is not transmitted from animals to humans:

"The pork import ban for several countries, including parts of Serbia and Northern Macedonia, was introduced to prevent the disease from entering Montenegro and endangering both domestic pigs and wild boars in our region," Djakovic said.

The citizens we interviewed point out that they have confidence in the inspectors and believe that they do not have to worry about the quality of the meat they buy in stores and butchers.
"I heard about the outbreak of that African swine fever, I consume pork, but I believe it has been controlled," Petar from Podgorica points out.
"Well, such information about various diseases in animals certainly do scare me, but I mostly eat domestic pork, from pigs we raise in the countryside, so it's best to have your own," Zora from Niksic concludes.
