Kazakhstan: Hybrid terrorist attacks

Kazakh Secretary of State Jerlan Karin said today that the recent riots in that country were attacks by terrorists who tried to carry out a coup.

"I think we experienced a hybrid terrorist attack on Kazakhstan, which, as the ultimate goal, had a general destabilization and possibly a coup," Karin said, according to the agencies.

He rejected comparisons with "colored revolutions or a plush revolution", stating that the government in Kazakhstan is too strong to succumb to such developments.

Instead, as he said, the riots are a "conspiracy of internal and certain external forces" because, as he says, among the terrorists were both Kazakh and foreign citizens.

Protests erupted in several Kazakh cities on January 2, escalating into mass riots.

Law and order were re-established in all regions of the country on January 7, Kazakh authorities said.

January 10 has been declared a day of mourning throughout the country.
