AFTER BREXIT

Reserved places for new EU members in European Parliament

Some of the seats in the European Parliament that remain vacant following the UK's withdrawal from the EU will be left for new countries that can join the Union in the future and a part will be redistributed to members that are not sufficiently represented, the European Parliament said.

A large majority in the European parliament agreed on Wednesday to cut the number of members from currently 751 to 705 after Brexit. Of the 73 current UK seats, 27 will be redistributed among 14 countries currently under-represented, while 46 seats are held in reserve for new member states to join the bloc. EU leaders are expected to greenlight the plan at their summit in Brussels on 28-29 June.

As proposed, five additional deputies in the new EP will have France and Spain, three Italy and Netherlands, Ireland will receive two, and Poland, Romania, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, Slovakia, Finland, Croatia and Estonia one deputy each.

Redistribution takes effect only if Britain leaves the EU.

Otherwise, the current division of the sites remains in place until Brexit is finished.
