MEETING WITH MERKEL

Zaev: Negotiations on EU accession this year

Prime Minister of Macedonia Zoran Zaev said in Berlin today after meeting with German Ambassador Angela Merkel that he is "strongly convinced" that his country will start accession talks with the EU this year.

Zaev said that the Chancellor informed him that the Bundestag "would in September decide to approve the start of EU negotiations with Northern Macedonia, in accordance with the established procedures of Germany for expanding Union membership."

In his words, in a "cordial and friendly meeting’’, Merkel stressed that North Macedonia "has delivered what has been expected of it, and that she personally, and the Berlin, are looking very positively to it."

"We are firmly convinced that this year already we are starting negotiations on membership in the EU and finally joining Serbia and Montenegro," who are already negotiating, Zaev said.

"We have confirmed that the Republic of Northern Macedonia has a lot of trust in Chancellor Merkel and that it supports its policy of the EU enlargement, as well as its policy towards the Western Balkans," he added.

Zaev pointed out that he was happy that the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a positive attitude on launching EU negotiations with Northern Macedonia, and that procedural acts and democratic processes that will allow the Bundestag to make a positive decision in September, should be respected.
