STOLTENBERG SAID

Finland's entry into NATO will be without difficulties and quick

NATO Secretary General, Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg, welcomed the today expressed will of Finnish leaders to join the Atlantic Alliance and promised them a quick and easy accession process.

"This is a sovereign decision of Finland. If Finland decides to apply for membership, it will be warmly admitted to NATO and the admission process will be smooth and fast," he said in a statement.

 

Finnish President and Prime Minister Sauli Niinisto and Sanna Marin said in a joint statement today that they support joining NATO "without delay", and took big steps towards the candidacy, which should be announced on Sunday.

 

"Finland is one of NATO's closest partners, an grown up democracy, a member of the European Union and a country that contributes significantly to Euro-Atlantic security," Stoltenberg said.

 

"Finland's accession would show that NATO's doors are open and that Finland is deciding on its own future," he said.
