AT THE AGE OF 66

EP President David Sassoli passed away

European Parliament (EP) President David Sassoli passed away at a hospital in Italy. As stated by his spokeperson, Sassoli died at 1.15am in Italian city of Aviano.

Sassoli has been hospitalized since December 26 due to abnormal functioning of the immune system.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, extended his condolences to Sassolli's family and relatives.

"We already miss the honest and passionate European, his human warmth, generosity, friendship and his smile," Michelle said on Twitter.
Sassoli was born in Florence on May 30, 1956.

He had previously suffered from leukemia, and in the fall he was hospitalized due to pneumonia, which prevented him from performing his duties in the Parliament for several weeks.

The life of former RAI TG1 journalist David Maria Sassoli was divided between journalism and politics. He became the president of the EP in 2019, and was the member of it since 2009.

Sassoli's term of office was marked by a coronavirus pandemic, during which buildings in Brussels and Strasbourg were used as a refuge, a place to prepare meals for the vulnerable and testing centers.
European Commission President Ursula von der Layen expressed condolences over his death, describing him as a "great European and Italian" and a "dear friend".
