AGAINST AGREEMENT ON THE NAME

Protests in several Macedonian cities

Protests against the agreement with the Greek authorities on the new name of Macedonia were held last night in several Macedonian cities, including Skopje, Bitol and Prilep, Macedonian portals reported.

Portal Nova Macedonia reported that about 2,000 people gathered last night in front of the Parliament building in Skopje, opposing the agreement with Greece.

Demonstrators demanded the government's resignation shouting "Macedonia" and "Traitors".

A strong police force was deployed last night in front of the Macedonian Parliament (Sobranje), but there are no reports of possible conflicts.

The newspaper Vecer reported that the protests were held in Bitol and Prilep and that citizens opposed holding a referendum on name change.

According to the agreement between the prime ministers of Macedonia and Greece, Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tzipras, Macedonia would change its name to the Republic of Northern Macedonia, which requires a change in the Constitution and a referendum, while Greece would withdraw its opposition to Macedonia's accession to NATO and the start of its EU accession talks.

Opponents of the agreement in Greece have announced protests in the center of Athens for today.
