Immunization with AstraZeneca and Oxford vaccines begins
Britain on Monday took another giant step in the fight against COVID-19, ramping up its immunization program by giving the first shots in the world from the vaccine created by Oxford University and pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca.
More than half a million doses of the vaccine are ready for use, BBC reports.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said it was a "pivotal moment" in the UK's fight against the virus, as vaccines will help curb infections and then allow restrictions to be lifted.
Six hospital trusts - in Oxford, London, Sussex, Lancashire and Warwickshire - have begun administering the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab, with 530,000 doses ready for use.
Most other available doses will be sent to hundreds of GP-led services and care homes across the UK later in the week, according to the Department of Health and Social Care.
But Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned on Monday there was "no question we will have to take tougher measures", which will be announced in "due course", as the UK struggles to control a new, fast-spreading variant of the virus.
