There will be setbacks and new challenges in the coming year

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that there will be setbacks and new challenges in the new year, urging intensified efforts to ensure the discovery of new variants of the coronavirus.

Ghebreyesus said at an online press conference that the WHO is working closely with scientists around the world to better understand the changes in the virus and their impact.

He stressed the importance of increasing the capacity of genomic sequencing worldwide, as well as sharing information with the UN health agency and other countries, reported Tanjug.

The new strain of coronavirus, which was discovered in the UK and South Africa and which looks more contagious, has caused concern around the world and led to the introduction of new travel restrictions this month.
