AFTER YESTERDAY'S UNRESTS

Kyrgyzstan's election commission annuls elections

The electoral authorities in Kyrgyzstan have annulled the results of parliamentary elections following violent protests.

In a statement by the Central Election Commission, the parliamentary elections that took place on 4 October have been declared invalid.

"Due to numerous irregularities during the voting and in the pre-election period, a decision was made at the meeting of the members of the Central Election Commission to declare the parliamentary elections invalid," the statement reads, reports Tas s.

The decision was made in order to "avoid tension" in the country, the head of the Commission Nurzhan Shaildabekova told the Interfax news agency on Tuesday.

Opposition supporters stormed government buildings overnight, including the White House, home to parliament and the presidential administration. They demanded a new election after parties close to pro-Russian President SooronbaiJeenbekov swept Sunday's vote, according to the official results.

A group of protesters went to Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee of National Security, demanding to free former president Almazbek Atambayev, who was convicted on corruption charges earlier this year and sentenced to 11 years and two months in prison. Security officers released Atambayev after negotiations with the protesters.

Members of several opposition parties announced plans to oust Jeenbekov and create a new government.

“We intend to seek the dismissal of SooronbaiJeenbekov from his post,” MaksatMamytkanov, a member of the Chon Kazat party, told Interfax on Tuesday, adding that opposition parties also insist on adopting a new constitution.

KursanAsanov, an opposition politician and a former senior security official, had taken over as acting interior minister, a ministry spokesman said.Police had been ordered to ensure citizens' safety and prevent clashes and looting, the same spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the second-largest gold deposit in Kyrgyzstan, Jeruy, was shut down by unidentified people on Tuesday, its Russian-owned operator said.

Well informed sources estimate that President SornobayJeenbekov is losing control over the state.
