DURING THE PANDEMIC

Decline in EU economy smallest in Sweden

The coronavirus pandemic has hit the Swedish economy less than other European Union countries. In this country the economic decline from April to June was 8.6 percent compared to the previous three months.

Sweden, which did not have extremely restrictive measures during the pandemic, had a smaller economic downturn than the rest of the EU where restrictive measures existed, writes the BBC.

But it is the biggest quarterly economic downturn in Sweden in 40 years, official statistics show.

Among the countries that have had a major economic downturn are those that have been hit hard by the pandemic. In Spain, the decline was 18.5 percent, in France and Italy 13.8 percent.

The BBC reminds that Sweden's strategy to fight coronavirus was based on the self-responsibility of citizens. Among other things, it was related to physical distance, work from home, and avoiding the use of public transportation. Most economic entities did not interrupt their work.
