Pyrotechnics and ammonium nitrate led to the explosion

Experts, based on videos and consequences, point out that pyrotechnics and ammonium nitrate led to a large explosion that demolished the port yesterday and severely damaged the capital of Lebanon, Beirut.

The extent of the damage, from the epicenter of the explosion, which left a tens of meters wide crater in the port of Beirut, which entered the sea, to the windows blown miles away, is similar to the explosions of ammonium nitrate - a chemical compound used as fertilizer, but also as a component explosives.

However, this compound is usually not activated by itself, and in this case the cause was probably a fire in a neighboring warehouse in the port with pyrotechnics.

Videos of the initial moments of the disaster show sparks and light in the smoke rising from the flames just before the second, larger explosion.

That indicates the activation of pyrotechnics, said Boaz Hayoun, the owner of the Israeli "Tamar Group" which cooperates with the Government of Israel in connection with the safety and certification of explosives.
