EU ministers discuss preventing the spread of coronaviruses

EU health ministers are holding an emergency meeting in Brussels on how to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading in Europe as the daily death toll sets a new record in China.

Ministers from the 27 EU member states that have met over the epidemic, which affected about 60,000 people worldwide, will be joined in the debate by World Health Organization Executive Director Mike Ryan via video link.

The World Health Organization has said it's "too early" to say when the epidemic will end.

A record 14,800 new cases of coronavirus were reported within 24 hours in China's Hubei province on Thursday. The death toll from the virus in Hubei province also jumped by a record 242 fatalities, more than doubling the previous record number of 103 deaths set on Monday, partly due to changes in how the deaths are tallied.

Health officials announced Thursday they had begun including people diagnosed using new clinical methods in official statistics.

Fewer than 50 cases are registered in Europe, but the EU insists that coordinated action is needed to reduce those numbers.

COVID-19 is caused by a member of the coronavirus family, a close relative of severe acute respiratory syndrome and the Middle East respiratory syndrome virus that have caused epidemics in the past.

JanezLenarcic, the EU's crisis management commissioner said before the meeting that the risk of further spread of COVID in Europe was still low but could be increased.
