CRITICAL IN AUSTRALIA

30,000 people summoned for the evacuation because of the fire

Fires are burning out of control across Australia in a heatwave which has seen temperatures exceed 40C (104F) in every state.

On Monday, the most dangerous fires were in the state of Victoria.

About 30,000 residents and tourists were told to leave East Gippsland - a popular holiday region - but evacuations were later deemed too risky as fires blocked some major roads.

Victoria was worst-affected on Monday, as scorching temperatures, strong winds, and thunderstorms created dangerous conditions.

Emergency services say the fires combined with thunderstorms and a change of wind direction means Monday will be a day of 'extreme danger' and that people need to leave the area.

More than 1,700 firefighters worked on Christmas Day, and around 1,400 on Boxing Day to fight the fires in Australia and 100 are continuing to burn across the country.

More than 100 blazes continue to burn in New South Wales, the state worst-affected by the fires so far this year.
