INCIDENTS IN BRUSSELS

Right-wing MPs turned their back during the anthem

As the European Parliament opened in Strasbourg, the third day of talks were due to begin in Brussels, the Belgian capital, between EU leaders hammering out negotiations over who should take the top jobs in the 28-nation bloc.

At the opening of the parliament populist British representatives, right-wing Nigel Farage and his Brexit Party MEPs, turned their backs on the parliamentary chamber as the European anthem, Beethoven's Ode to Joy, was played by a group of five young musicians. Other parliamentarians stood in dignified silence. Outside the parliament, at least 4,000 demonstrators waved the Catalan flag. Among them was CarlesPuigdemont, the former head of the Catalan regional government who lives in Belgium to escape a Spanish arrest warrant.

The main candidate for the president of the European Commission is socialist FransTimmermans. Although a large number of countries favours this option, however, there was not a sufficient majority for the decision to be adopted.

There is little time to negotiate, because the deadline to nominate candidates for the president of the European Parliament expires tonight. In order to discuss their candidacies in the parliament in Strasbourg, they must arrive in Strasbourg by tonight.
