CONTROLLED EXPLOSION

The remaining parts of the bridge in Genoa demolished

Demolition experts have blown up the remains of the Morandi bridge in the northern Italian city of Genoa, nearly one year after the massive structure collapsed, killing 43 people.

More than 3,400 residents in the area were evacuated on Friday morning ahead of the controlled explosions, which brought down two large towers consisting of about 4,500 tonnes of concrete and steel.

Explosives were attached to the legs of the towers and the parts of the bridge still standing. Dozens of water tanks and sacks were placed alongside and below the structure, to prevent the spread of fine dust by creating a wall of water some 50 meters high.

Minutes before the spectacular explosions, sirens rang out and water began to spray the structure from the tanks around the base. It took less than seven seconds for the towers to be razed to the ground.

Forty-three people were killed on Aug. 14, 2018 when, during heavy rainfall, part of the bridge, and cars travelling along it, fell to the ground. The accident sparked a fierce debate about the safety of Italy's infrastructure.
