ELECTIONS IN ISRAEL

Today the decision on the political fate of Netanyahu

Israelis have begun voting in a tight election race viewed as a referendum on Benjamin Netanyahu, who hopes to extend his decade-long stretch in power to become the country’s longest-serving prime minister.

Polls for legislative elections opened across Israel today to elect members of the twenty-first Knesset.

The two major rivals contesting in the election are the Likud-National Liberal Movement led by the current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Blue and White led by the former Chief of General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Benny Gantz.

Under Israeli electoral law, a political party participating in election can enter the Knesset only if it receives over 3.25 percent of the valid votes cast. The leader of the party with the most seats in the 120-seat Knesset will be authorized by the President to form a government, but the new government must maintain over half of the seats or 61 seats in the Knesset. Previous polls show that the Blue and White and Likud both are likely get about 30 seats
