Armenia's Parliament To Vote For New Prime Minister On May 1

Armenia's Parliament announced today that the lawmakers will vote on May 1 for the country's next prime minister, following the resignation of Serzh Sarkisian from the post after 11 days of protests, reports the AP agency.

Opposition leader Nikol Pashinian recently said he was ready to lead the country.
Armenia is shaken by a political crisis after Sargsyan resigned as prime minister following protests against his appointment for that post.

Sargsyan, who was the president of Armenia from 2008 to March this year when his term expired, has recently been appointed prime minister under the new parliamentary system, which weakened powers of president in favour of the government and prime minister.

The opposition considered it a move designed to enable the former president to remain in power.
