LAW ON RELIGION

LeposaviC: There is no discrimination; DPS left the session

Opposition MPs left the session of the Human Rights Committee of the Montenegrin Parliament discussing amendments to the Law on Freedom of Religion. Representatives of the CPC were not invited to the Committee meeting. Minister of Justice Vladimir Leposavic said that the amendments to the Law ensure that there is no discrimination between religious communities.

The Minister of Justice, Vladimir Leposavic, stated that the Law on Freedom of Religion that is being adopted is not new, but the Law on which the Venice Commission has already given an opinion is being slightly changed.

"There is no legal regulation that obliges state bodies to seek the opinion of the VC for every change in the law, especially when it comes to a law that already has the opinion of the VC," Leposavic said.

The goal of the amendments to the law, he says, is to remove the provisions for which the CoE has already recommended to be removed from the law.

The President of the Committee for Human Rights of the Parliament of Montenegro, Jovan Vucurovic, said at the beginning of the session at which the amendments to the Law on Freedom of Religion are being considered that he invited representatives of traditional religious communities in Montenegro to the session.

DPS MP Aleksandra Vukovic asked for the debate to be postponed, because they do not have the opinion of the Venice Commission.

She said that Minister Vladimir Leposavic was the Minister of "injustice".

“Is this a court-martial, are we witnessing legal violence? What is this? ”Vukovic asked.

At the beginning of the session, Vucurovic said that he had received a letter from the ombudsman Sinisa Bjekovic to invite the representatives of the Montenegrin Orthodox Church to the session.

"It is my right to decide who to invite, I used that right to invite representatives of traditional churches," Vucurovic said at the beginning of the session.

Halil Dukovic (DPS) said that while he was the head of the committee, it was recognized for the protection of rights and freedoms and not denying the right to speak to anyone.
