PROPOSED LAW

Parliament resumed debate on amnesty

The Montenegrin parliament continued the debate on the proposed law on amnesty, which envisages a reduction of the prison sentence by 15, ten or five percent for persons who have been convicted of certain crimes.

The amnesty, which was proposed by the deputies of the ruling coalition, except for the Social Democrats (SD), is explained as a necessary measure in the current situation of the coronavirus epidemic in order to relieve the prison capacity and reduce the number of employees.

The draft law was submitted by MPs Milos Nikolic, Andrija Popovic, GenciNimanbegu, Ervin Ibrahimovic, AdrijanVuksanovic, DanijelZivkovic and JovankaLalicic.

Deputies from the SD, the Forca and the Croatian Civic Initiative submitted an amendment stipulating the law should not be applied for the aggravated murder convicts.

SD MP Ivan Brajovic said earlier that the representatives of that party will not support the proposed law on amnesty, unless that amendment is adopted.
