Attacks on journalists to be investigated
Attack on journalists Tufik Softic and previous cases of violence against media and journalists must be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators processed, announced the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Montenegro.
As reported, the delegation was concerned about attacks on journalists Softic in Berane, to whom in the front of the house an explosive device was activated.
"The EU will not accept any deviation from European standards on the freedom of expression and the media of the countries that want to join the union. The latest incident, as well as previous cases of violence against media and journalists must be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators processed in accordance with the law, " it is said the statement of the Delegation.
They recalled that the attack on Softic was not the first attack on the journalist's, stating that he was brutally beaten in front of his home by unknown perpetrators, in 2007.
"The delegation called on the authorities to urgently investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of the attack in 2007. , as well as those who participated in the last incident on Sunday night against Tufik Softic, " delegation announced.
Delegations reminded that media freedom is a fundamental right protected by international law and one of the pillars of democracy.
They added that that freedom of media reflects country’s commitment to democracy, good governance and political accountability, adding that it is an integral part of the EU accession negotiations, especially Chapter 23, which covers the area of human rights.
"The delegation will continue to monitor the observance of human rights, including the rights of the media and journalists during the accession negotiations, " it was concluded.
