Irinej: The position of Serbs in Montenegro is not defined

In Montenegro, so far, the position of the Serb people has not been defined from the appropriate place and in an appropriate manner, considers the Patriarch of Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Irinej.

Commenting on his recent statement that the position of Serbs in Montenegro is worse than at the time of the Ottoman Empire and the NDH, in an interview for the Vecernje Novosti Irinej said: "If the statement you are mentioning helped to openly talk about the problems of the Serbs - assimilation, discrimination on different grounds, brutal imprisonment and falsification of history, attempts to seize the relics, cultural and religious heritage - I am more than satisfied.”

Since, as he said, Montenegro is a historically classic Serbian country, "our Sparta, as we used to say" then the SPC must be what it is and what it has always been there.

"Under any rule, the Turkish, Venetian, Communist, it was the pillar of Orthodoxy and Serbianism, Serbianism in the sense of preserving, nurturing and advancing Orthodox culture, as well as the clear defense of the endangered rights of peoples and individuals. This is by no means a threat to the state and the authorities, nor their prerogatives”, the head of the SPC said.

The Irinej’s statement on the position of the Serbian people in Montenegro has caused a sharp public reaction, which is why the state top asked an apology from the SPC’s head.

While visiting Cetinje yesterday, Irinej said he was glad to be in Montenegro and added that his mother had Montenegrin roots.
