MEDENICA

With co-operation against Organized Crime

International judicial co-operation is key to combating organized crime, said President of the Supreme Court Vesna Medenica at the conference "Regional Judicial Co-operation: Achievements and Future Perspectives", organized by the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEM) in Podgorica.

"Being a complex and narrowly specialized area, it requires knowledge of national, European and international standards, often the knowledge of foreign languages and good communication skills," explained Medenica.

Bearing in mind that the training program ‘’Euro 2’’ was adopted in April, she said that Montenegro has made a significant breakthrough in improving the knowledge of judges and their associates in this area.

Courts and state prosecutors, as judicial co-operation bodies, must maintain mutual trust in cross-border cases and good will to address all the challenges that may arise in the process of providing international legal aid to neighboring states and members of the European Union,"said Medenica.

She stated that the judiciary has contributed to the process of creating a national-normative framework with EU members through active participation in working bodies.

"The judiciary has acted proactively in the field of judicial co-operation and has timely noted that the application of EU legal instruments in this area will be a special challenge for judges and will increase their scope of work, which is why we need additional training in legal aid, both in civil and criminal parts of cases,"Medenica said.

She said she expects their professional support to further strengthen the efficiency and legal aid mechanisms.

"And that, through the advancement of reliable and cooperative judicial co-operation with other states, we will remove all obstacles in providing a decisive response to organized crime," Medenica added.
