ATTACK ON LAKIC

Ministry of internal affairs, police and prosecutor’s office top officials to be questioned

The Security and Defense Committee will hold control hearings of the heads of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP), the Police Directorate, the National Security Agency (ANB), and the Supreme and Chief Special Prosecutor on the current security situation and wounding of the Vijesti journalist Olivera Lakic.

The Committee decided to question minister of internal affairs Mevludin Nuhodzic, acting director of the Police Vesko Damjanovic, head of the National Security Agency Dejan Perunicic, supreme state prosecutor Ivica Stankovic and chief special prosecutor Milivoje Katnic.

The Committee Chairman Obrad Stanisic said he would ask the MUP, ANB and the Prosecution to provide information about the current security situation as soon as possible, with a special focus on the Lakic case, after which they will determine the date of the hearing.

He said that the members of the Democratic Front should have attended the session, but that they did not come. Stanisic said that Lakic’s wounding was an event that upset the public.

"It's not a shot at a man, but at independent journalism, all democratic institutions and the state," Stanisic said.

The deputy Mico Orlandic said that Lakic was committed to investigative journalism and that every such case deserved great attention.

"From today's session a message should be sent to the competent authorities to work even more responsibly and more conscientiously to clarify the case," Orlandic said.

The deputy Marta Scepanovic supported the initiative for the control hearings.
