Attack on Lakic - a loathsome incident

US Helsinki Commission Policy Advisor, Robert Hand, urged Montenegrin institutions to quickly resolve the attack on a journalist of the daily News, Olivera Lakic.

The attack on the journalist, as he rated it, is a loathsome incident.

"We have had a briefing on the murder of investigative journalists, focusing on two journalists who were killed in Malta and Slovakia. The attack in Montenegro was mentioned several times.   Solidarity with investigative journalists was expressed not only with Olivera Lakic but with all journalists in the region who are facing threats because they are doing their job. This is not the first case  in Montenegro. There was also the case in Bijelo Polje, which indicates that this is not a problem but a trend to deal with," he said in an interview with Voice of America.

The attack, as he said, "may not speak so much about the freedom of the media in Montenegro, but about organized crime and corruption".

"Journalists come to a fact that some do not want to be published. One of the main messages yesterday is that preventing journalists from publishing these facts violates the public's right to know them,’’ Hand said.

The U.S. Department of State has already asked for a quick and decisive investigation of the attack with the message that journalists must be provided with safe working conditions.
