REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS

Pressure on RTCG stepped up

Montenegro is ranked 103 out of 180 countries in 2018 World Press Freedom Index in the regular annual report of the Reporter Without Borders. Compared to the previous report, it has advanced in three places and is among countries with "problematic" media freedom.

‘’The authorities have stepped up pressure on the public broadcaster RTCG to change its independent editorial policies, and have placed leading supporters of the ruling DPS party in key positions at RTCG. Journalists are harassed and threatened by the country’s rulers. None of the physical attacks on journalists of previous years was punished in 2017. In some cases, prosecutors also pressured journalists to reveal their sources. Self-censorship and safety continue to be major challenges. Defamation has been decriminalized since 2011, but lawsuits against independent journalists and media are common. Media outlets also have to cope with major economic difficulties. Most state agencies support the pro-government media by paying them to publish their advertisements. Jovo Martinovic, an investigative reporter accused of drug trafficking, was released conditionally in early 2017 but is still awaiting the outcome of his trial.’’it is said in the report.
