MONTENEGRO PART OF THE ROUTE

Are we ready for a new wave of migrants?

The migrant route through Montenegro is slowly becoming the most frequent route for refugees from the Middle East and Africa to the European Union. Since August last year, the number of migrants trying to reach Western Europe through Albania and Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina has drastically increased.

Only in March of this year there were about 350 refugees in our country, which is half of the total number of asylum seekers during the last year.

The asylum seeker is not a threat, explains Farbut from Iran, who changed his faith and fought for respect for human rights, for which he had to escape from Iran. He illegaly came to Montenegro from  Albania.

"I escaped from Iran after some of my friends were arrested. I was sure I would be arrested, too".

Fabrut has been in the Asylum Center in Spuz for five months. Ali from Syria, who came to Montenegro with his wife and three children, is residing there as well.

The routeFarbut and Ali have travelled on have lately become the main route of migrants to the countries of the European Union.

When they enter Montenegro they ask for the asylum, not with the intention to really stay here but to prepare for the continuation of the travelling. The question is how many more migrants go through Montenegro without registering or seeking asylum.

Given the migration trends in the region, it is expected that a certain number of people illegally crossed through Montenegro, but UNHCR does not have credible data.

In recent years, the border with Croatia is almost impenetrable, but it is increasingly difficult to cross the Bosnian border as well. In addition to the inaccessible terrain, there is also the border police of Bosnia and Herzegovina which stops migrants and, according to the Readmission Agreement, returns them to Montenegro where they have applied for asylum.
