HOYT YI SAYS

To preserve editorial freedom of RTCG

The government should take steps to preserve the editorial freedom of the RTCG or its democratic credibility will be reduced, assessed Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the United States Hoyt Brian Yi.

In an interview for the Vijesti he said that taking over political control over public services could be a step back on the Euro-Atlantic route of Montenegro.

"We are concerned that the Assembly jeopardized the editorial independence of the Public Service by making changes the RTCG managing Council, with an action that seems like political motivation to limit the freedom of the media. The government urgently needs to take steps to underline editorial freedom of the RTCG or the government's democratic credibility will be reduced, which would be a step backwards on the Euro-Atlantic route of Montenegro. More importantly, the public in Montenegro could lose confidence in the Public Service, whose duty is to provide citizens with independent and objective reporting, " he said commenting on the opposition, NGO and media warnings that the DPS is openly trying to take over the political control of the RTCG.

He also said that all political leaders have the responsibility to respect the freedom of the media, which is one of the pillars of democracy.

"The United States join the European Union in emphasizing the need for Montenegro to show significant progress in protecting journalists and preserving media freedom," Jy said.
