THE PROSECUTOR OF THE HAGUE COURT

Thaci is trying to devalue the work of the KLA crime court

The chief prosecutor of the Hague tribunal for KLA crimes, Jack Smith, warned that the amendments to the Constitution of Kosovo, proposed by President Hashim Thaci, represent an attempt to "end, or otherwise devalue, the operation" of that court.

Smith assessed that the amendments are "part of a broader strategy for undermining the court", in light of the fact that he filed a motion against Thaci six months ago for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Kosovo.

According to Smith, the amendments concerning the termination of the work of the KLA crimes court are "unnecessary", because the Constitution of Kosovo in its current form "adequately" regulates the mandate of the Specialized Chambers of Kosovo, as the court is officially called.

"The proposed amendments are aimed at reviewing or reshaping that mandate. It is clear from Thaci's own public statements that the basic intention of the proposed amendments is to try to end, or otherwise devalue, the work of ... the Court and the Prosecutor's Office, which is contrary to Kosovo's international obligations, " Smith warned.
