A policeman wounded, the attacker committed suicide

A Croatian police officer was shot and wounded in the St. Mark’s Square in front of the main government building in the capital Zagreb early this morning, and the presumed attacker was found dead shortly afterwards, police said.

According to the police report, the shooting took place shortly after 8 a.m.

“Police later found a person who had committed suicide and whose description matches that of the perpetrator,” police said.

The wounded policeman belonged to the security detail for the government building, the state news agency Hina reported.

The alleged perpetrator, a 22-year-old Croatian citizen, committed suicide in the nearby Jabukovac area.

Authorities said the suspect was not previously known to them and no motive for the shooting has been confirmed

The injured police officer underwent surgery and his condition was described as "stable".

Police have sealed off the area around the square and all planned activities by the government or other state institutions in the area have been cancelled.
