TODAY IN BRUSSELS

New negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo begin

Serbia and Kosovo will start new negotiations today in Brussels on the normalization of disturbed relations, after a long standstill. EU official David McAllister pointed out that the positions of the two sides are "still very far apart", but also that this is the way to the normalization of relations.

On the eve of the continuation of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, the President of the Foreign Policy Committee of the European Parliament, David McAllister, assessed that the positions of the two sides are "still very far apart" and that today's meeting between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Avdulah Hoti can only be the beginning of normalization.

"After almost two years of silence, it is good that the representatives of Belgrade and Pristina are talking again, but we should not expect quick solutions," McAllister told Deutsche Welle.

McAllister assessed that "the positions are still very far away" and that "it is now necessary for both sides to show political will and engagement."
He emphasizes that it is in the interest of the EU to encourage talks and connect them with "a clear perspective of EU accession".
