COOPERATION TERMINATED

Without EULEX, the work of the Special Court in Kosovo is difficult

Without EULEX, it will be difficult for the Special Court to fulfill its mandate in Kosovo, because the European mission provides logistical and operational support to that court, Koha Ditore writes today, citing a source.

The special prosecutor's office in The Hague announced five days ago that Kosovo President Hashim Thaci is suspected of war crimes, at a time when he refused to hold annual correspondence with official Brussels regarding the extension of the mandate of the European Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo.

The source of the daily says that the termination of the EULEX mandate , or any interruption of the cooperation of the institutions with that mission, would greatly complicate the work of the Special Court.

"Therefore, there is an attempt to remove a very important link acting on behalf of the Special Court, such as EULEX. Although there are legal dilemmas if the continuation of the mission's mandate depends on correspondence or not, in a situation where Kosovo's institutions will not offer co-operation, it will be difficult to carry out orders or access to information, whether it is the police or even local courts," the source said.
