KOSOVO’S PARLIAMENT SPEAKER

Pro tempore taxes suspension to resume dialogue

Kadri Veseli, Kosovo’s Parliament Speaker, suggested on Wednesday that Pristina should temporarily suspend the import tariffs on goods from Serbia and Bosnia to enable the resumption of the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue on the normalization of relations, the FoNet news agency reported.

Veseli, the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, the largest party in the Government, added that Pristina would not accept any deal with Belgrade if it violated the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Kosovo.

He told the Voice of America (VOA) that “we will sit down with Serbia whenever the US and the European Union tell us to,” but reiterated Pristina would not agree to anything harmful to Kosovo.

He said he supported an idea on pro tempore suspension of the 100 percent tariffs introduced last November so that the negotiations could continue.

Veseli added that “anyhow, the suspension could not be forever.”

He had changed the opinion on taxes twice before. In early May, he said the tariffs were his idea, but that they should be suspended for four months because of the US request. Later that month he said the taxes should remain place.

Veseli reiterated Pristina’s stand that a solution to Kosovo problem could be Serbia’s recognition of “a sovereign state of Kosovo within the existing borders.” Pristina would, he said, recognize the state of Serbia in return.

He sees such moves as ‘a new era of cooperation and communication.”

“That will make it easier for Serbia as well 20 years after the liberation of Kosovo. Serbia well knows it has lost Kosovo,” Veseli said, adding the international community should help Belgrade “to accept that reality.”

Veseli said he heard that Kosovo’s Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj advocated the breakup of the dialogue, but he had a different opinion.
