THACI ASSESSED

Without an agreement with Serbia we are entering a dangerous zone

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci warned on Monday that the entire region could face destabilization if Belgrade and Pristina fail to reach a legally binding agreement by the end of the year.

“We want to clear up our relationship as a state with the state of Serbia which we can achieve only through a dialogue with clear deadlines, precise goals, guarantees and international support from the US and European Union. I don’t doubt that we will enter a danger zone which could destabilize the entire region if we don’t reach a legally binding agreement between Kosovo and Serbia this year,” Thaci told the opening of a conference in Pristina.

Thaci was speaking just days after a planned summit of top political leaders from Belgrade and Pristina was cancelled. The meeting was supposed to be held in Paris at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“Despite recent initiatives to open the dialogue, the result is zero. The lack of a dialogue and the possibility to reach an agreement to normalize relations between Kosovo and Serbia is the biggest possible risk to the security and stability of Kosovo,” he said.

“We all know that we can’t wait another 20 years to resolve relations with Serbia once and for all. Time is not our ally. The status quo with Serbia is not stable and that is clear from a poll which showed that more than 91 percent of the population are against the status quo,” he said and voiced satisfaction that a majority of the population also support “corrections to the border”. Thaci said that as president he has a moral obligation to do everything he can to help the Albanians living in southern Serbia’s Presevo valley join Kosovo in a peaceful and democratic manner.
