Tsipras on thin ice because of Macedonia

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Sunday said he would call a confidence vote in his government after his coalition ally quit, thus breaking parliamentary majority and raising the possibility of snap elections. Earlier, Greece's right-wing defense minister resigned in protest at a deal ending a long running dispute with Macedonia over its name, saying he was taking his other six ministers in cabinet with him.

Athens and Skopje struck the deal on the new name in June last year, but Macedonia can start using it only after the parliament in Athens also approves the change. The deal meant ending three decades long dispute emerged after the collapse of former Yugoslavia and in the same time it opened Macedonian path to join NATO and EU, which represented an incentive for five West Balkan neighbors also wanting to join European block, states the Financial Times(FT).

Stating that Tsipras now has to fight for majority in the parliament where his party has 146 of 300 deputies, the FT adds that his failure would endanger the agreement on the new name of Macedonia.

The confidence vote is expected to take place later this week.
