All nations together again in Srebrenica

Hundreds of Srebrenica citizens of all nations and generations will gather on August 17th in the city that was the scene of the crime, in order to send the message that Bosniaks and Serbs, but also everybody else in Srebrenica, can live together 18 years after the war.

The organizer of the event called "As once before" Faruk Smajlovic told the Anadoly News Agency that he expects about 400 people from all over the world to come to Srebrenica on August 17th for the fifth in a row interethnic socializing and remembrance of the pre-war fellowship.

"This is an event which breaks national, religious, political and generational barriers for at least one day. People who have not seen each other for 20 or more years gather there, and some generations are using this already traditional gathering to organize graduation anniversary", said Smajlovic adding that socializing of former friends, neighbors and classmates have multiple effects.

Smajlovic is also the leader of the pop-rock band ''Scandal'' (formerly ''Old Town''), which will amuse participants of the event "As once before", and members of the bands that played before the war will also play at the event.

"This can only be done in Srebrenica. Serbs and Bosniaks play together, sit together, socialize, and after all, live together", said Smajlovic.

He complains that it is hard to organize event because of the lack of support, which is why the costs are generally settled "out of their own pockets".

This year's event will also have a humanitarian character, because the funds will be collected for the sick fellow citizen Jasminka Aljovic, who urgently needs medical treatment abroad.
