BECAUSE OF THE BORDER

Media: Croatia has the entire region in its hand

Croatian media, analyzing the recommendations of the European Commission for the Western Balkans, state that Croatia now keeps in its hands all the neighbours who want to join the EU, because of the borders.

What the Croatian media highlighted as essential in the latest EU Strategy for the Western Balkans is that the issue of final membership of Serbia and Montenegro, as well as other Western Balkan countries' pretenders, will be conditioned by a solution to bilateral border issues.
The Croatian media also point out that Juncker warned that the entry of states with mutual open border issues will not be allowed in the future, and that the unresolved arbitration dispute between Ljubljana and Zagreb was a bilateral but also an European issue.

"The new Commission’s strategy and warnings that there will be no membership before resolving all open border issues does not apply to Slovenia, because it has no problems respecting the rule of law, court decisions and arbitration solutions, but to Croatia," said in an interview for portal Siol .net Borut Suklje, analyst and consultant, former diplomat and ambassador of Slovenia to Serbia.
He said, the Jutarnji List reports, that he expects pressure to be made on Croatia which has unresolved border issues with all neighbours, with the exception of Hungary, especially because one of these countries is Serbia, and the EU is interested in making it an EU member state.

The Maribor newspaper the Večer, also had a sharp comment, claiming that such EU strategy is wrong, because the approach of border disputes conditioning will lead to the entire region becoming a "hostage of Croatia".
The Jutarnji List also notes that the European Commission, although it mentioned enlargement as a priority in the Strategy, made so many obstacles on the path to membership that enlargement in the foreseeable future is not realistic, and Juncker has it all "spiced up" with the statement that enlargements will not happen until all border disputes are resolved, which will particularly affect Serbia.
"Thus the entire Balkans can become a hostage to the official Zagreb, Croatia has no settled border issue with any neighbouring country, except Hungary, which means that it is in a potential conflict with Serbia over the Danube border, with Montenegro over the border on the sea and Prevlaka, with Bosnia and Herzegovina over almost the entire length of the border. One could express oneself metaphorically and say that now Croatia is “holding for b... " the entire Balkans”, writes the Večer.
