NEW STRATEGY

Restoring the engagement towards the Western Balkans

President of the Foreign Policy Committee of the European Parliament David McAlister said that the new strategy for the Western Balkans, which will be presented tomorrow by the European Commission, aims to "strengthen the reforming will of the six countries, as well as to restore the political engagement of EU members towards the Western Balkans."

McCallister said for the ‘’Funke Mediengruppe’’, which has a dozen daily newspapers in Germany, that the accession of Montenegro, Serbia and other Western Balkan countries to the EU depends on the fulfillment of strict "legal, political and economic" criteria, and that those countries will join the EU "only if they implement comprehensive reforms in the following years," Deutsche Welle reports.

The German envoy said that the European Commission had cited the year of 2025 as a possible date for accession of Montenegro and Serbia in EU but that it was actually an "indicative" non-mandatory term that should concretize the accession perspective and provide the new dynamics to the accession process.

"The specific date for the accession of a new EU member will depend exclusively on time period when each country individually meets strict legal, political and economic preconditions," McCalister reiterated.
