ZAEV AND HARADINAJ

International investigation of the ‘’Kumanovo’’ case

In the first-ever visit by a prime minister to neighboring Kosovo on Tuesday, Macedonia’s prime minister Zoran Zaev said that Skopje would acquiesce to Kosovar demands for a new, international investigation into a 2015 attack by militants from Kosovo in the northern Macedonian town of Kumanovo.

Eight police officers and 10 militants were killed in fighting that was hotly disputed by both sides and was the worst outbreak of violence in Macedonia since a nine-month insurgency by fighters from its Kosovar minority in 2001.

"Such an issue is in the interest of our cooperation and that should not remain an obstacle to our ties," Zaev said at a news conference with his host counterpart Ramush Haradinaj.

Zaev also commented on the issue of Kosovo's admission to UNESCO, saying that it was postponed for now, but that he hopes that the dialogue on bilateral relations between Kosovo and Serbia, to which Macedonia provides great support, would also run in parallel.

"Kosovo needs to count on Macedonia's support in all its processes, but at the same time you know that the Republic of Serbia is also our neighbor, so, in line with good neighborly relations with all countries, we hope that issues will be solves bilaterally, and we will be here just to help both countries," Zaev said.

He pointed out that this is the first visit of a Macedonian Prime Minister to Kosovo, that the relations of two friendly countries are very good and that there are no open issues. He said that so far 19 agreements and 16 other documents have been signed, and that there are still 21 signatures planned.
